For our technology integrated assignment, this week we were supposed to prepare a video and implement flipped classroom approach. It is a style of teaching that flips the roles in the traditional way of teaching in which the teacher teaches at school and assigns a homework to be done. Instead of discussing the topic in the class, we shoot a recording of the lesson which is enriched with visuals and will be watched by students at their space whereas the practice part is done in the classroom. Of course, like many approaches this approach also has pros and cons. It’s advantages are that it eliminates plagiarism, there is more time for practice, it lets students to learn in accordance with their self-pace and chance to take the lesson more than once and pause where s/he could not recognize and providing time for students to internalize the topic until practice time. On the other hand, it’s disadvantages are that it requires hard work and self sacrifice of the teacher, if the lesson is in a video format there may not be access of all students to the technology and if a student comes to the class without having the lesson, s/he will fall behind his/her class.
Our task was either creating a video discussing a grammar topic for a preparation class or teaching words to a 5th grade class. I and my pair Hajdar Yalçın chose teaching words to young learners with the help of technology. We used Powtoon app to compose our video but we had a little bit difficulty while preparing the video actually because we did not know how to use the app as it is our first time creating a video so it took us many hours to create it but it was a fun and pragmatic experience.
Overall, it was an instructive and exciting experience to make a flipped classroom video and I think of implementing it when I become a teacher.
